The Constitutional Court has dismissed the request to nullify the results of the local elections held on June 30, 2019.

The request to declare them unconstitutional was made by the Albanian Association of Municipalities.

The Constitutional’s final ruling comes after the Venice Commission has presented their opinion on the matter.

In the next 2 weeks, the Constitutional Court will be releasing a final verdict, where they will make their case on why this request was ultimately dismissed.

The 2019 local elections were boycotted by the opposition, which meant that the ruling Socialist party entered the race without an opponent.

This decision serves to formally certify the status of these local elections and paves the way for President Meta to decide on the next move for the 6 municipalities that are currently left without a mayor.

After the Constitutional has released their full statement that will include their reasoning behind this verdict, president Meta will have to decree a date for the partial elections to be held in the municipalities of Shkoder, Lushnje, Diber, Durres, Rrogozhine and Vore.
