Finding a place to live in Tirana is not hard, but the problem is finding an apartment that is affordable.

Esi Basho, a senior student at the Agricultural University of Tirana lives at the Don Bosko area, around 15 minutes away from the city center, regardless of the distance, the price of the rent is too expensive for her.

“If we look at last year, the maximum that you could rent a condo for was around €204, but this year the prices begin at €250, and we’re not even dealing with Albanian Lek anymore. To me this is ridiculous because our salaries are in Lek, so why should other things be in Euro”, Esi tells us.

In other neighborhoods, such as Ali Demi, 21 Dhjetori, Rruga Elbasanit, Komuna Parisit, and Astir, prices vary from €300 to €500. But these figures are too high for the pockets of a student.

“My family was helping me out when I first moved to Tirana, but I’ve been working for the past two years so I could sustain myself. I share the rent with a friend, as we have other expenses too such as university fees, books, transport”, she adds.

And if a student tries to find a home closer to the university, prices go even higher.
