The construction of the Llogara tunnel, giving travelers the option to avoid driving around the peak of the mountain, officially began on Sunday.

The tunnel is expected to cut travel time from 50 minutes to 7-10 minutes.

Prime Minister Edi Rama and infrastructure minister Belinda Balluku inspected the construction site.

During her word, minister Balluku vowed that the project will bring significant economic and touristic development.

“This is the day that a long-held dream becomes a reality, opening up a new perspective for the touristic and economic development of the region”, Balluku said.

PM Edi Rama said that the project has been “dormant for three decades”, and that its construction will “boost the value of properties” in the area and “bring A-level tourists”.

“A major deed which heightens to another level the country’s infrastructural network, by significantly shortening travel time to the Ionian coast and increasing road safety for both foreign and local travelers, in support of Albania’s further touristic development”, concluded Rama.
