Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, in a televised address, called to convene the National Assembly on December 11, shortly after the leader of the Democratic Party called for it to take place on December 18.
Berisha compared Basha’s moves to those of the former communist system, which tried to prevent the students’ protest back in the 90s.
During a party presidency meeting, Basha said to convene the National Assembly on December 18, something that Berisha is now refusing based on claims that the members of the presidency “were appointed in violation of the party’s statute”.
The former prime minister stressed that the National Assembly will take place on December 11, recalling that it is the wish of 4,200 party delegates.
Berisha also had a message for Albanian PM Edi Rama to halt any efforts for becoming a barrier to DP’s National Assembly.
In addition, Berisha reached out and invited Basha to the assembly.
“I have no particular message for Basha, but I can tell him that he’s invited to the Assembly on December 11”, said Berisha.
“A peaceful revolution”
Berisha described the internal situation at the Democratic Party as “a peaceful revolution that nobody can dare to stop”. According to him, the DP has turned into a “façade of Rama’s power”.
“I want to guarantee all signatories that there will be no force that will dare to mess around with your signs. The Assembly will convene on the date called by them, and not according to that hostage of a leader. Nobody will dare to stop this, this is the most peaceful revolution in Albania”.
