The Prosecutors of the Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organized Crime, broadly known as SPAK, sent an appeal to the Albanian Assembly calling on it to extend their mandate.
The prosecutors argue that the “necessity to tackle crime cannot be limited in time”. According to them, the 9-year term is insufficient, drawing a parallel to other prosecutors who do not have a limited term.
“From what we have ascertained during the two-year period from the establishment of the Special Prosecution we think that it is imperative to implement several legal changes that will serve to increase the efficiency of SPAK’s work”, a statement sent by prosecutors read.
They also highlight that it will be difficult to find another group of 20 prosecutors when their mandate ends and suggest upscaling the number of special prosecutors amid mounting new responsibilities accorded to the institution that is tasked to fight corruption and organized crime.
SPAK has a total of 15 special prosecutors. The High Prosecutorial Council opened a competition to acquire two more and is currently under a selection process.
