Since early Monday morning, the marathon plenary session dedicated to discussions over the 2022 State Budget has turned into a full-blown mayhem.

Along with discussions on stats and issues concerning the budget, the plenums were characterized by a complete lack of etiquette by MPs, who didn’t spare one another, launching full-fledged character assassination campaigns and direct personal attacks.

PM Edi Rama went with his usual ironies against DP chair, Lulzim Basha in regards to his ‘supposed lack of economic knowledge’ all the way to deforming the last name of Democratic MP Jorida Tabaku.

In turn, Basha retaliated with another personal attack directed at Rama.

“You shouldn’t apply double standards when it comes to behavior. Rama insults the opposition both individually and as a collective. The lady you’re referring to is a doctor of science, since your time as a scoundrel in the alleyways of Paris,” said Basha.

Even though the US ambassador to Albania, Yuri Kim, asked MPs to immediately put an end on the aggressive language being used in Parliament, including the lack of etiquette, tensions continued to escalate through to his Tuesday’s plenum.

The debate deteriorated further and risked turning into a physical altercation between Socialist, Erion Barce and Democrat Ervin Salianji, prompting the intervention of the National Guard.
