Despite the fact that it’s been several days since Zoran Zaev’s public declaration that he would be stepping down as North Macedonia’s prime minister, the failure of the motion of no-confidence initiated by opposition parties has resulted in a political standstill for the status quo.
PM Zoran Zaev is now attempting to enlarge the current government with additional MPs, because at the moment he only has 60 MPs, which is not enough to pass laws, whereas VMRO-DMPNE and the rest of the opposition block are asking for snap elections.
Meanwhile, Zaev’s SDSM is signaling that it would be open to negotiate with Afrim Gashi’s Alternative, to have them join him in a Grand Coalition – even though the Alternative has been part of the opposition coalition thus far.
On October 31, after a disappointing result in the second voting round of the local elections, where he lost the capital of Skopje, Zaev declared his resignation as the country’s prime minister as well as SDSM’s chair.
This however was considered by the opposition and political analysts as nothing but a ‘tactical move’.
