The Prime Minister of North Macedonia Zoran Zaev will gather the Center Council of his LSDM party on Tuesday to formalize his resignation from the party’s leadership. The move will open the way to the appointment of a new leader, which will then be able to ask the president to form a new government as the party holds a parliamentary majority.
As the incumbent PM said, constitutional procedures require that a new government is not voted prior to December 14, a time he warned that North Macedonia may launch accession negotiations.
“You know the constitutional procedures. A new government cannot even be formed before 14 December, nor elect the next prime minister. Therefore, during this time it is logical that LSDM spends its time choosing its new leader. That is why I hereby inform you that I will ask party bodies to organize the ascertainment of my resignation on Tuesday and to start the procedure for the appointment of the new chairman who will be the next prime minister and propose the new government “, said Zoran Zaev.
It is still unknown who will take over from Zaev but one of the names that have been mentioned the most is Dimitar Kovacevski, current deputy minister of finances.
On Tuesday, the presidency of the Alternative is also set to meet to decide whether to join up the government.
