Waste should be divided into plastics, paper, organics etc, from the very moment it gets thrown into the garbage bin.

This was the appeal made by minister of the environment and tourism, Mirela Kumbaro, who was invited on Erla Mehilli’s ‘Now’ to talk about the ways that the air quality and our environment can be improved.

Kumbaro argued that the law on waste management that was drafted back in 2011, states clearly that all waste must be divided accordingly so that it can later be recycled more easily.

According to her, the biggest mistake in the Albanian government in the past 30 years has been precisely the way they’ve dealt with waste management. People consume and produce every single day, which is why it’s crucial that we classify our waste from the moment we decide to throw it away, said the minister.

“This has only been done through personal initiatives, and photos and Facebook, but never has it been made into a system,” – said Kumbaro.

In addition, the minister put an emphasis on the fact that if the person that pollutes doesn’t himself become part of the cleaning process, the problem of pollution will never be solved.
