This Sunday marks the 109th anniversary of Albania’s Declaration of Independence. On November 28, 1912, Ismail Qemali raised the national flag in Vlora, officially proclaiming Albania an independent and sovereign state.
Through the act of raising the national flag in the historic city of Vlora, the head of the temporary government at the time, Ismail Qemali, notified the 6 superpowers: England, Italy, Austro-Hungary, France, Germany, and Russia about Albania’s sovereignty and asked them to officially recognize it as such, seeing it as a natural progression of the willpower of Albanian people.
The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important events in the history of the Albanian nation. It represents the fruit of all the efforts and century-long battles fought by the Albanian people in the name of protecting their territorial entity and their right to form an autonomous state in the land of their ancestors.
November 28, 1912, marks a historical turn for Albania as it also puts an end to the 500-year-long Ottoman rule in our country. The Declaration of Independence was a great victory for our nation, even in terms of making a bold statement against the anti-Albanian politics of neighboring Balkan monarchies – particularly against their plans to completely segregate Albania piece by piece and divide it amongst one another.
On this important day for our nation, the President of the Republic, Ilir Meta, extended his greetings to all Albanian citizens and accompanied them with a unique photo of him, alongside the nephew of Kosovo’s late former President, Ibrahim Rugova.
