Kosovo Specialist Chambers has refused a guarantee given by the Kosovo Police for the provisional release of the country’s ex-president, Hashim Thaçi currently being held at The Hague.

Among the reasons listed by the Special Chambers are interventions in the judicial process in Kosovo, even making an accusation that Kosovo’s Intelligence Agency had presented two witnesses to give fabricated testimonies.

In addition, the court at The Hague mentioned ties of Thaçi’s political opponents with terrorist organizations, the behavior of the KLA Veteran Association, including a statement from Faton Klinaku last summer which “clearly indicate that the climate persists”.

Arguments against Thaçi’s release also were tied to the safety and fear among witnesses to the case.

“Witnesses don’t necessarily have to be physically hurt to be intimidated; even the perspective of freeing the accused in Kosovo creates fear and insecurity among the witnesses in this case”, a statement released by the Specialist Chambers read.

Among the reasons elaborated by the court was a picture of Thaçi with the former police chief, Rashit Qalaj.
