The Democratic Party has proposed harshening punishments for electoral offenses.

Its leader, Lulzim Basha, announced on social media that the Democrats will propose to the Assembly to amend the Criminal Code so that politicians elected through votes cast by criminals can be sentenced to 22 years in prison and banned from holding public posts.

“Whoever accepts to receive votes in exchange of money or other favors from organized crime cells, be that directly or through mediators, should be sentenced to 15 years in prison […] If a politician is involved in this sort of schemes, and is then consequently elected, he should be sentenced to 22 years in prison and permanently banned from holding public posts”, wrote Basha on Facebook.

Basha’s proposal comes at a time when Democrats have also been pushing on vetting politicians.
