Deputy Assistant State Secretary and US Special Envoy for the Western Balkans, Gabriel Escobar, was on an official visit to Tirana today and has just come out of a meeting at the Democratic Party headquarters, where accompanied by the US ambassador, Yuri Kim, he met DP chair, Lulzim Basha.
In an official press statement soon after the meeting wrapped up, the US official praised the involvement of the opposition in the fight against corruption and invited the Democratic leader on a visit to Washington.
“I am glad to have had the chance to meet the opposition and they have expressed their engagement with NATO, EU integration and the fight against corruption. We are happy to be a part of all this, including things like sanctions against corruption. But to turn this into a reality, it calls for a sturdy dedication from the Albanian public institution. I am gladly looking forward to seeing the continuation of our relations with the opposition. I’m also waiting to meet Mr. Basha in Washington as soon as possible,” – said Escobar.
The high official’s visit to Tirana came only 2 days before the date set for DP’s National Convention, called by former leader Sali Berisha, where based on sources near Euronews Albania, those present will vote on discharging Lulzim Basha from this current position as party leader.
