The Venice Commission has adopted their final opinion on the extension of the Albanian vetting bodies’ term.

The Commission supports the extension of the mandate for the Independent Qualifications Commission and the Public Commissioners, through to December 31, 2024.

In addition, they have also come to the conclusion that the proposed extension of the mandate until December 31, 2024 can be considered compatible to European standards for as long as the judiciary is functioning efficiently.

The Venice Commission also maintained that they will be at the disposal of Albanian authorities when it comes to offering further assistance regarding the issue.

A few weeks ago, the Albanian Parliament went to the Venice Commission with a formal request to have an opinion regarding the issue of vetting extension, which has been met with quite a few disputes back home. So far, the Democratic Party hasn’t officially responded to the Commission’s final response. In order to have these changes applies to the Constitution, the Democratic party needs to also provide a significant number of votes.
