Denmark will be renting jail cells in Kosovo, for 300 of its inmates in an effort to reduce overpopulation in its prisons. The new measure will be limited to inmates that were already selected to be deported from Denmark.

Kosovo’s ministry of justice has posted a series of details regarding the agreement which will bring them an overall profit of €210 million euros.

“The inmates who will be transferred in this institution won’t pose a high risk. The Republic of Kosovo will be earning €210 million euros for this project, which will be dedicated to capital investments, [[invested] especially on renewable energy,” – stated the ministry’s notice.

According to the announcement, the bilateral agreement is set to be reached on Monday, December 20, following a visit of the Danish justice minister to the Republic of Kosovo.

The agreement is planned to be fully implemented over a 10-year period.

The project also aims to increase the capacity of Danish prisons by around 326 spots from 2022-2025, stated the declaration of the Danish ministry.

The population of Danish prisons has gone up by 19% since 2015, leading to more than 4.000 inmates at the beginning of 2021, which exceeded prison capacity by 100%, according to official stats.
