Links amongst organized crime, politics, and the business sector existed before the dissolution of former Yugoslavia and have continued since then. European MPs denounced the clear lack of responsible authorities in the region, to open up former Yugoslavia’s archives and have the casefiles returned to the governments that need them.
This was announced during last night’s report adopted by the European Parliament.
“The archives need to be opened. This will be an essential precondition to building mutual trust between the people of all 6 Western Balkan nations,” – said the EMP and author of the document, Lukas Mandl.
European MPs also underlined that it is important that countries of the Western Balkans collaborate and share their intelligence with EU member states as well as their international partners.
In addition, Mandl added that organized crime gravely damages citizens’ trust in their government institutions.
