In the next 2 years, the capital city of North Macedonia will be offering its residents free public transit. This was a pledge made by the city’s new mayor, Danela Arsovska, after the start of her new 4-year-term. In the beginning, she said that she will cancel all previous debts accumulated by the transit company and at a later moment, the state will also be buying more buses.

The initiative by Skopje’s municipal council also foresees that the free tariff won’t be applied to all citizens at once, but it will be a step-by-step process. However, the main concern for the public transit company isn’t the waived tariffs but rather the debt that has been accumulated through the years.

Skopje’s new mayor-elect also warned of a thorough financial investigation that will scrutinize the entire activity of her predecessor, while adding that she won’t be tolerating anyone, in spite of the fact that she has received multiple threats telling her to resign.
