Chairperson of the Serbian Parliament, Ivica Dacic has admitted that Serbia was the initiator of the regional initiative known as Open Balkan, adding that according to him, this is exactly what is bothering its opposers.

Dacic told the Serbia press that the region will need time to integrate into the European Union, adding that the Open Balkan initiative is in no way a substitute of the EU, or as some say a ‘second league’ of the European Union.

According to him, the initiative is an effort to take the necessary measures and adopt European criteria, regardless of whether they are part of the EU or not.

“Here [the Open Balkan] is the implementation of the principles and ideals of the EU, like freedom, the free movement of people and capital, the workforce and all of these are in the interest of every common citizen, therefore, I believe that this whoever is bothered by it, is amongst those who are generally against these ideas of collaboration, who are in favor of conflicts or looking for different objections rather than focusing on the need to live together,” – said Dacic.

Dacic claimed that for the above-mentioned reasons, he believes that those who have spoken against Open Balkan, are in fact, against Serbia rather than this idea, and that was is bothering them is the very fact that Serbia was the one to propose it in the first place.

In addition, he said that the fact that Serbia is very strong and that it can appear as the leading country in the region, is another issue that bothers them, cited Kosova Press.
