Cybersecurity engineer, Erjon Hasanaj was on Euronews Albania this morning to talk about the massive data leak that took place yesterday where hundreds of thousands of citizens’ personal information including their wages and places of work were made public.

Hasanaj argued that these sensitive records were most probably publicized by someone on the inside that has direct access to the operative system.

“There hasn’t been an official report yet, but according to the preliminary indicators, chances are that this is an internal threat, committed by a person on the inside that has direct access to the system,” he said.

The expert also said that the personal ID number is a sensitive piece of information that can be misused by other people or other countries.

“This leads to what is known as identity theft, which can lead to someone opening an account using your identity. This data can be a very valuable asset for a country or organization that doesn’t have your best interest in mind,” – said the expert.

In addition, he said that through an ID number, one can create a completely new identity, through which they can then have access to sensitive bank information or even e-Albania.

“The amount of damage that can be done through a stolen identity is endless,” – said the expert.
