The majority of citizens in Korce as Christians and today they are celebrating Christmas – the birth of Christ.
In order to take a closer look at the ways a regular family in Korca celebrate Christmas, Euronews Albania paid a warm visit to Anesti and Marjeta, who are husband and wife.
We found the lady of the house in the kitchen.
“As it starts to dawn on Christmas Day, we begin cooking. We cook the meat, whatever we have at hand, meatballs, potatoes, yogurt, everything. The meat is a tradition and has to go first,” – said Marjeta Cule.
On the other hand, her husband Anesti tells us that he used to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ during the communist regime as well, even though it was all kept secret.
“I used to come to the church in secret, so that no one would see us because if they would, we would be in big trouble,” – said Anesti Cule.
“The elders go to Church everyday and pray for their children and close relatives. Trust should be cultivated by today’s younger generations as well,” – said Marjeta.
“We have tried to engrain [faith] to our sons and their wives. We have gone to church wherever they are currently living right now, like in Italy and the US. It’s better for them, because it never teaches them harm, it’s only good for them,” – she added.
This year, the Christmas wish of a simple Korcar family is that all Albanians may come together and unite in peace.
“I wish all Albanians that they can have goodness in their own families; that they can get to know the best of people and the warmest of people and that they may get closer to one another and their loved ones. May they live a beautiful and peaceful life, and unite with their families,” – said the couple from Korca.
