In tonight’s ‘Shock’, political analysts Andi Bushati and Baton Haxhiu shared their thoughts on the main topic circulating in the press today, of whether or not Tirana’s mayor, Erjon Veliaj was dealt a major blow, after the recent data scandal exposed the salaries of hundreds of thousands of Albanian citizens, including his close advisors.

The leaked payslips scandal brought to light the ironic truth about many high-paid professionals, especially those working as advisors to Tirana’s mayor.

€216 thousand euros a year of Albanian taxpayers’ money goes to cover for the salaries of  Veliaj’s advisors – an amount that is much higher than what is required to pay for PM Edi Rama’s team. This newly-surfaced database caused a major backlash from public circles and various media personalities.

Analyst Andi Bushati gave his take saying that this recent blow to Veliaj has a definite political undercurrent.

“Through a deductive logic, the only person who can pierce through the hermeticism, which Veliaj surrounds himself with, is either Rama or the group of politicians that are close to him, who see Veliaj as a rival and possible successor. Therefore, in all this noise, there is a definite political undertone,”- said Bushati.

On the other hand, Baton Haxhiu said that PM Rama is on his third term in government and doesn’t see the mayor of Tirana as a rival, which is why the prime minister can’t be the one attacking him.

“Rama has made a projection and he doesn’t see any political rivals in the short-term. Plus, Rama doesn’t need an alliance because he is still very strong,” – said Haxhiu, adding that when someone is in power for such a long time, ‘these kinds of blows are normal’.
