Albanian immigrants living abroad are coming home in great numbers to spend the winter holydays with their close families.

The majority of Albanians from Vlora, live in Italy, where the current situation has become worrisome due to rising COVID cases, which has encouraged immigrants to come home to celebrate.

The head of processing at the Port of Vlora, Festim Skendaj told Euronews Albania that in comparison to the previous year, the influx of arrivals has almost doubled.

“We are currently receiving double the number of arrivals compared to the previous pandemic year. Things aren’t even close to summertime but over the past several days we are seeing 2000 arrivals per day and around 1.000 departures,” – said Festim Skendaj.

“The pandemic is influencing the rate at which we can travel, because it used to be a tradition for immigrants to come home for New Years. Before the pandemic we took in about 40 000 arrivals,” he added.

This Thursday alone, the Port of Vlora expected 200 new arrivals. The influx is on the rise, especially after a long period of strict measures due to pandemic prevention plans.
