Dastid Pallaska, part of the defense counsel of former President Hashim Thaci at The Hague, said that he is only being kept at a pre-detention over suspicions that he might interfere with the process.
According to Pallaska, the Special Court founded by Kosovo itself does not believe in the country’s institutions.
Thaci’s attorney said that there are no conditions to keep him behind bars, adding that Thaci surrendered voluntarily, but the court is treating them as if they are arrested.
“Despite the fact that my client, and the majority of those being kept there, surrendered voluntarily, in our case the former President renounced from personal constitutional immunity which protected him from being detained and is being treated as if he was arrested and caught red-handed aiming to dodge justice”, said Pallaska.
“On the other hand, there are no conditions to keep him in prison and is only being kept based on allegations and hypothesis that he might interfere in the procedures although no evidence has been offered that would suggest that”, he added.
He said that the prosecution filed an indictment without being fully prepared, showing that it is not serious at all in this delicate process.
Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi are pending trial at The Hague following accusations on war crimes.
