The government of Kosovo announced that it will take measures to overcome the energy crisis that has caused massive power outages across the country.
Recently, the Technical Committee recommended banning the mining of cryptocurrencies as a way to reduce energy consumption.
“Based on the recommendations of the Technical Committee, last week I decided to take emergency measures that would prohibit the production of cryptocurrencies throughout the territory of the Republic of Kosovo,” said Artane Rizvanolli, Kosovo’s economy minister.
Law enforcement authorities have been advised to intervene in cases they suspect dubious activities.
However, experts have raised their voices against the decision.
“I think that the decision was taken too soon and was wrong because they did not quite analyze the situation, for example how many miners are out there and how is that affecting the crisis”, says Milot Mehmeti, an expert on cryptos.
According to Mehmeti, thousands of families, whose main source of income is cryptos, have been affected by the decision.
“I think it affected some 20-30,000 families and their income. I know many people that did not leave the country as they’ve turned to cryptocurrencies”, he said.
He also explains that the latest technology does not consume a lot of energy and that there are forms how to save energy without halting an activity that generates profits.
