Judges, lawyers, and members of civil society have come together in Shkoder today, to protest against the new government move that aims to merge all district courts into one.
The High Judicial Council held a meeting earlier today in Shkoder, to discuss the new judicial map, which aims to unify the Court of Appeals into a single body.
This proposal faced major backlash from the main justice at the Court of Appeals in Shkoder, Fuat Vjerdha, and other lawyers.
A board was placed at the entrance of the conference hall today, by protestors who wrote that if they took away the courts, they would bring back the old Canon law.
Participants proposed the creation of at least a minimum of 3 courts of appeal, more specifically in Shkoder, Tirana, and Vlora, thus facilitating citizens’ access to these regions.
