Albania came in last, in a list ranking European countries by minimum wage. With a minimum wage of 30 000 ALL or 250 euros, our country couldn’t outrank a single country in Europe, out of the 48 on the list.
Even though in 2021, the minimum wage was pushed up by an additional 30 euros, it still doesn’t put us on the map in terms of the bare minimum wage our workers need to get paid by law.
In comparison with the main country in the list, Luxemburg, the minimum wage in Albania is 9 times lower, and compared to the average wage in Europe, it’s 4 times lower.
More than 25% of Albanian workers get paid minimum wage, and when taking into account their monthly spending, its worth becomes even lower.
Based on findings of Eurostat, the largest cut of an Albanian family’s monthly spending, goes for food – an indicator of the country’s worrying poverty levels.
The government has promised to raise the minimum wage again this year – part of a plan to bring it up to 330 euros by 2025.
