The Constitutional Court will rule on Tuesday whether President Ilir Meta violated the highest law in the land, the Constitution.
In case the Court proves the allegations raised by the ruling parliamentarian majority, then Meta will get impeached.
If not, Meta will stay in office until 29 April 2022.
If the president is impeached, Meta will immediately be stripped of his competencies, and his post is filled by the Speaker of the Assembly.
Meta was appointed President on 28 April 2017 with 87 votes in favor from both SP and SMI.
Albanian presidents have a 5-year term and their role is generally honorary.
Meta’s actions have many times given rise to disputes with the government of PM Edi Rama.
The Albanian judicial system maintains that the verdict of the Constitutional Court cannot be appealed.
In an interview for Euronews Albania, President Meta said that he will take his case to the arbitrage if he’s dismissed.
However, the Constitution does not have a precedent on which it can rely upon in case the President is impeached.
The only prediction is: In case impossibility is proved, the seat of the President remains vacant and the election of the new President starts within 10 days from the day of the proof of impossibility.
Meanwhile, the procedure for the selection of a new president must start no later than 60 days before the expiration of the mandate.
In other words, even if Meta does not get dismissed, the procedure for his replacement will roll over in February.
Meta has previously declared that he doesn’t want another mandate, although the Constitution allows his reelection.
The Albanian President was impeached by a majority vote in parliament on 9 June 2021.
