Saimir Tahiri was nothing but a scapegoat used by Rama to impress the EU and make Albania look worthy of integration, said lawyer Maks Haxhia.
During his interview on Euronews Albania’s SOT, Haxhia commented on former minister of interior Saimir Tahiri’s recent sentencing by the Special Appeals Court, sending him to prison for 3.4 years on charges of abuse of power.
According to Haxhia, this arrest paves the way for more existing and former officials to meet the same fate.
PM Rama, said Haxhia, is trying to make Albania look like it’s fulfilling its conditions and like it’s actually making an effort to implement the justice reform.
“Those trumpeting the reform nowadays are looking for another scapegoat. The first reason is to show Europe that we sent our internal affairs minister to prison and that there will be others. This way, we look like we’re fulfilling EU’s conditions. A second reason is to show that if they can do this to Tahiri who could be innocent, they won’t think twice about doing the same to someone who did as little as put down a signature.
