The police have forced residents of 5 Maji – a neighborhood in northern Tirana – out of their homes, following a government-ordered demolition project.
Euronews Albania has gotten ahold of the footage which shows the moment when residents clash with police and refuse to give up their properties in the middle of the surrounding rubble.
Meanwhile, in several of the demolished buildings, citizens have decided to stay on top of the roofs or what remains of the outer walls.
According to the neighborhood redevelopment project, a total of 400 buildings are expected to be demolished after being selected to take part in the Earthquake Reconstruction Project.
Residents have been protesting the government’s decision to have their homes demolished for some time now, under allegations that they haven’t been given any guarantee or signed any contract that assures them that their homeownership rights won’t be violated.
