29% of Albanian children suffering from cancer passed away during 2020, according to a recent report by WHO Europe.

In total, over 100 children – ages 0-19 – were diagnosed with cancer in 2020.

WHO’s Regional Europe Office ranked Albania in 6th place, out of 48 countries in Europe and Central Asia, when it comes to the mortality rate as a result of cancer.

In comparison to other countries in the region, Montenegro is at the same level as Albania – with an incidence rate of 3.8. North Macedonia however was ranked 34th with an incidence rate of 2.1.

The report also underlines that the mortality rate from cancer amongst children has gone down considerably in the last decade, thanks to medical treatments.

However, the significant difference in mortality between countries in northern and southern Europe comes as a result of the lack of resources, treatments, therapies, early diagnosis, and a general lack of funds amongst public institutions and lower-income families.

In more developed countries, 80% of children diagnosed with cancer are able to overcome the disease, whereas in poorer countries less than 30% of children are able to survive.

Based on a forecast by WHO from 2020-2050, there could be a total of 13.7 million children diagnosed with cancer on a global scale, of whom 11.1 million children risk losing their lives.
