The Constitutional Court overturned the parliament’s decision to impeach President Ilir Meta.

The Constitutional Court adjudicated that there were no ‘serious violations to Article 88’ as:

  • Facts tied to the rights of the electoral process do not constitute grave violations of the Constitution
  • Facts tied to relations with strategic allies do not constitute as grave violations of the Constitution
  • Facts presented as violations in connection to the independence of public bodies do not constitute grave violations of the Constitution
  • Facts presented as violations to security and public order do not constitute to grave violations of the Constitution

On June 9, the parliament convened and 104 MPs voted in favor of the president’s impeachment citing serious constitutional infringements.

This was the first time in the country’s pluralist history that a president gets discharged by the assembly before the expiration of his mandate, setting a precedent in the Albanian political scene.

The spokesperson of the President, Tedi Blushi, reacted shortly after the Court’s ruling claiming he was ‘not surprised by the decision’ and that the entire process shouldn’t even have started altogether.
