55 citizens have died in the last 24 hours in Serbia due to COVID-19. Fatalities were confirmed as a result of 17.667 tests.

Health authorities in the capital of Belgrade have also announced that a total of 136 patients are currently receiving specialized treatment in hospitals across the country and have been put on respiratory support.

Yesterday, a total of 62 citizens died of COVID and another 3.876 were newly infected.

Vaccination consultant and head of the Public Health Association in Serbia, Dragoslav Popovic said that countries that are lifting restrictions in Europe are heading the vaccination campaign but that Serbia is experiencing an entirely different reality.

Popovic told Euronews Serbia that there’s a significant number of actively infected patients nationwide and that many of them can’t receive other basic health services due to COVID-19.

In addition, he also talked about the high number of health professionals who have been infected and that Serbia isn’t at a favorable point to lift restrictions.

“The situation at the present moment might look like the end of the pandemic, especially in countries that have been more successful in imposing preventive measures and vaccination. We need to be conscientious however that the situation is different in Serbia and that we can’t alleviate restrictions at this point,” – he said.
