Serbian president Alexandar Vucic reacted to Kosovo’s request to speed up the process of accession into NATO and said that Serbia “will always respect international law and the territorial integrity of Serbia”.

“This isn’t an idea of Albanians in Kosovo, but an idea of politicians in the United States,” – said Vucic.

“This is how they want to force 4 countries of the EU that are members of NATO to recognize the independence of Kosovo. We aren’t naïve. Serbia will comply with international law; we will respect our territorial integrity,” – said Vucic during a press conference on the situation in Ukraine.

While commenting on the current conflict, Vucic said that Serbia is facing major pressure to impose sanctions on Russia.

Meanwhile, Kosovo’s defense minister Armend Mehaj, called for Kosovo’s immediate membership into NATO, following the Russian incursion in Ukraine which could be putting Kosovo at a greater risk. In addition, he asked the US to set up a permanent military base within Kosovo territory.

Kosovo isn’t a NATO member but the peacekeeping KFOR mission has deployed around 3.746 troops in the country from around 28 different countries.

NATO forces have been present in Kosovo since June 1999, after the end of the war and the withdrawal of Serbian forces.
