The government can’t intervene when it comes to the rising price of oil, because it’s the free market that decides not the government.

This was a statement made by PM Edi Rama during a press conference on the current energy crisis as a result of the war in Ukraine.

In addition, Rama said that “we’re living in times of war”, we have no idea how long they’re going to last and as a result, we will be faced with the unknown – much like we did, during the pandemic.

Rama also noted that according to him, it’s absurd to suggest lifting the tax on oil and that the government’s collection of taxes, is what’s keeping energy prices at the current level.

“We are hearing absurd proposals like lifting all taxes on oil. Our administration is keeping oil prices unchanged, and avoiding a much higher jump in energy prices,” – said Rama.

In the worst-case scenario, PM Rama said that Albania could suffer from an oil and energy shortage.
