Seniors and the disabled were invited to Euronews Albania this morning to talk about their hardships over the past couple of months.

Faced with the current crisis, the government decided to allocate an extra €25-euros to their monthly pension plans. However, many representatives from these vulnerable groups are saying that this won’t be nearly enough to cover their entire monthly costs.

Activist Mira Pirendi spoke about the hardships that seniors are facing in Albania.

“No one would be able to go by with these retirement benefits. If they don’t get extra help, they can’t make it through the month. We need more help from the local government,” – she said.

With tears in her eyes, Pirendi said that she has seen senior citizens who have no means to pay for their electricity bills and are forced to use hot-water bottles to warm up.

“It’s not about the extra €25 euros. Even if he were to give them €250 euros, they wouldn’t be able to cover their expenses. It hurts my heart to think about the senior women I’ve seen, who have to put hot-water bottles under their feet to stay warm. They’ve worked their entire lives – paid their taxes – and now they have to use bottles to warm up,” – said the activist.
