North Macedonia is gathering humanitarian aid to send to Ukraine.

The government and the Red Cross urged citizens in Skopje to donate whatever they can, mainly food, sanitary objects, and money.

“Your role today is to mobilize the entire society, as it is more necessary than ever to help out Ukrainians who fell victim to the unprovoked aggression of the Russian Federation. Hospitals, kindergartens, and people are being bombed today. The people need water, medicines, and other essential goods”, said Bujar Osmani, the country’s foreign minister.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to Skopje hailed North Macedonia for showing solidarity and made an appeal to citizens to welcome in eventual war refugees.

“We want to thank North Macedonia for supporting Ukraine, sanctioning Russia, gathering aid, and taking in refugees. It’s obvious that more refugees will come if this situation persists, everything depends on Putin’s regime. We want to live, meanwhile, our neighbors want to see us dead and this brings us to a place where there isn’t much space for compromise”, said Natalia Zadorozhniuk.

The Secretary-General of the Red Cross of North Macedonia Sait Saiti said 51 Ukrainian refugees have been recorded so far. Also, the country has gathered around €50,000 in humanitarian aid.

“As of yesterday, we have registered 51 Ukrainian citizens. 30 of them are staying in Skopje, while the others have been sheltered in Shumica, Gjevgjel, and Vallandova. We’re prepared for a larger wave of refugees”, Saiti said.

North Macedonia is currently assessing its capacity in taking in more refugees, but it has pledged that it will not ban any refugees entering its territory.
