“I’m in favor of temporarily lifting the VAT tax on oil,” – said Kosovo’s ex-minister of commerce and industry, Ismet Mulaj.
Mulaj was invited to speak on Euronews Albania about the current economic crisis and the rise in the price of oil and other basic food products.
“Over the past 4 days, oil has gone down by €1.38 euros. Taxes are 59 cents. Excise is 36 cents a liter and VAT tax is €1.85. There have been efforts to lower the VAT tax – as it is a definite burden to citizens,” – said Mulaj.
In addition, Mulaj explained that the VAT tax can be lifted temporarily for a period of 1 to 3 months at a time.
Meanwhile, when asked about the price of oil in Albania, Mulaj pointed out that in our country, we are faced with 7 additional taxes that pile up on top of the original price.
“Albania has twice as many cars [as Kosovo], and it spends 50% less fuel. This speaks of a high level of tax evasion in our country. Having so many taxes on one single product isn’t particularly effective and it creates the necessary grounds for abuse,” – he argued.
