Wizz Air announced that it will launch three new low fare routes to Europe, including from the Tirana airport.

“We’re adding three new destinations, Warsaw, Lyon, and Nuremberg, with flights twice a week starting in July and September. Eventually, we plan to invest more here. It is a growing market, even during the pandemic “, said Evelin Horváth, acting network officer at Wizz Air Group.

By 2025, the Hungarian low-cost carrier aims to have 19 of its aircraft operating from Tirana, something that will require adding about 700 people to its crew, mainly pilots, flight attendants, and aircraft technicians.

The entire aviation sector needs people according to the Director of Civil Aviation, Maksim Ethemaj.

“1300-1500 workers are required in the next 5 years”, he said.

An estimated €200 million will be invested in airport infrastructure in the near future. The amount will go towards enlarging Tirana International Airport, as well as the aircraft maintenance at the Vlora airport.

Construction work is currently underway at Tirana Airport, with online checks, scanners, luggage capacity, and exit gates to be added at the capital’s only commercial airport.

“For the next 3-4 years, we plan to accommodate up to 6.2 million passengers”, said Ethemeaj.

With the track adjustments, the plan is to add direct intercontinental flights.
