On February 28, Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelenskii signed the country’s official application to join the European Union.
After the Russian invasion, Zelenskii called to speed up the accession process, even proposing a ‘new special procedure’.
On the same day, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen declared that Ukraine ‘is one of us and we want them as part of the EU’.
However, Ukraine is still waiting for the official candidate status, a process that might require a long time ahead.
According to the latest YouGov Poll, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy said that they were in favor of Ukraine joining the union.
42%-60% of the citizens from these countries said that Ukraine ‘should be allowed to become a member’.
EU citizens were then asked about candidate countries, such as Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia.
Montenegro was the first option picked by Germans, Italians, Spanish and French.
Meanwhile, only the Spanish and Italians, responded positively to the question of whether Albania should join the EU.
Germans referred to Albania as the ‘most non-grata state’ among the six Western Balkan countries, giving it even a more negative score than Kosovo, which is not even a candidate country, yet.
The French were even more skeptical, opposing the accession of all other countries, except from Ukraine.
