Kosovo’s justice system whistleblowers reacted on Thursday to the appointment of the country’s Prosecutor-General by the Prosecutorial Council.

Blerim Isufaj was elected the new Prosecutor-General following a unanimous vote in the Council.

The diplomatic delegations of the United States and the European Union in Prishtina also voiced the same concern, criticizing the procedures that were followed on selecting candidates.

The Kosovo Law Institute, the Group for Legal and Political Studies and the ‘Speak Up’ Movement shared a joint statement recalling a report published in March pointing at violations detected during the assessment of the candidates.

According to the aforementioned organizations, the assessment had ‘undermined the meritocracy of the process’, and recommended nullifying the entire process.

According to protocol, Isufaj’s appointment must be decreed by the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani.
