Minors are getting more entangled in various criminal offenses every year, fleeing any sort of legal responsibility as prescribed by the law at least until they are fourteen.

Last year, 744 juveniles have been reported to the prosecutor’s office, that is over 41% more than two years ago. Around one-third of these cases were prosecuted, according to the Prosecution Office.

“The most common alternative to punishment is when the juvenile must maintain contact with the probation service and fulfill other obligations such as attending school, avoiding hanging out with other certain individuals who may negatively affect their behavior, or staying at home on a specific time schedule”, explains Klaudia Hasanllari, director of the Center for the Prevention of Juvenile and Youth Crimes.

The probation service is the institution that oversees the implementation of non-prison sentences handed down by the court for juveniles aged 14-18.

152 minors were being monitored in 2021, 49 more than the previous year. Theft and illegal driving were the most recurring offenses in 2020-2021.

Underage girls are also becoming more involved in crime, mainly in theft and drug trafficking.

Data shows that despite many of them did serve time behind bars, they return to committing offenses.

“We’ve been mainly dealing with offenses related to drug trafficking and theft, because they are acts that are not only related to the desire of the juvenile but also to the influence of criminal groups and their use of children or the social circle “, said Hasanllari.
