Analyst Andi Bushati said there were discrepancies between the US State Department report and the stance of the diplomats ‘who want to be on good terms with the government’.
According to Bushati the reports compiled by bureaucrats show the ‘true colors’ of Albania, adding that the report point to the exact opposite of the ‘picture painted by American diplomats’ in the country.
Bushati said that the report does not resemble whatsoever to the rhetoric used by Ambassador Kim.
“Have you ever heard [Ambassador Kim] talk about the patronage system? Have you ever heard her talk about ‘the big fish’? All the declarations from Kim, Escobar, and Palmer give this panorama of an evil force; the opposition and Berisha, meanwhile referring to Edi Rama as a trusted partner. But this report reveals that government corruption is the main issue”, said the analyst.
He referred to the 2021 report as the ‘darkest ever made by the State Department on Albania’
“Whenever Rama is caught red-handed, he starts to use mockery. This is the first time that Rama is bothered by a DOS report”, he added.
Meanwhile, Baton Haxhiu said that the DOS report bears the signature of Ambassador Kim.
“The report is based on research conducted by the Embassy, the media, and one-on-one meetings. The Embassy monitors the work of a government and sends a report to its own country”, said Haxhiu.
According to him, a single mistake could put the Ambassadors’ career at risk.
“If she sends wrong information she is out because there’s somebody else there who verifies the information” while adding that Ambassador Kim has in fact criticized the government several times.
