The rise in the price of electricity could affect over 55,000 families that consume more than 700kw/h per month.
According to confidential data secured by Euronews Albania, a preliminary study conducted by the energy distributor company (OSHEE) estimated that some 5% of households consume beyond that quantity.
The same sources explain that discussions are underway in finding a solution that could see these households pay 13-14 Lek kw/h.
However, it will be the Energy Regulator Authority to have the final say on the matter.
Euronews Albania sent an inquiry to this institution, but officials confirmed to not have received any response, adding that they are considering bringing back a model from 7 years ago that sets the price based on consumption.
The decision is expected to halt the consumption of energy amid skyrocketing energy prices, with consumers and households occupying only half of the total electricity consumption.
Currently, OSHEE bills 1 million 270,000 subscribers, while the average annual consumption of all households is 230 kW/hour per month.
