Italian businessman Francesco Becchetti appealed on Thursday a court’s verdict dated 23 February that sentenced him to 17 years behind bars.
Tirana Prosecutor’s Office sought a 20-year prison sentence against the Italian businessman and former owner of a news channel in Albania.
Becchetti is accused of theft through abuse of office, money laundering, forgery of documents, and fraudulent VAT schemes. The Tirana Prosecutor’s Office had requested 20 years in prison for the businessman.
A few months ago, Albania lost a trial against the Italian entrepreneur after shutting down Agon Channel back in 2015.
Albania was ordered to pay €110 million by the Court of Arbitration, arguing that the move was politically motivated.
