The Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime (GJKKO) seized on Tuesday several properties under the name of the Democrat MP in the county of Berat, Kasem Mahmutaj.

The court ordered the confiscation of two real estates, a vehicle, and an apartment amid allegations that they were bought through criminal activities.

Mahmutaj is the first member of parliament to have his property seized.

SPAK released the order after the MP is the brother of Gazmend Mahmutaj, an individual is under the radar of the Operation Force of Law, known broadly as OFL.

OFL was a body tasked to investigate on what basis convicted criminals amassed their fortune, sometimes taking aim at their close relatives, too.

Amid suspicions that the property was acquired through illegal activities, the Special Court seized from Gazmend Mahmutaj a total of 22 assets, including wealth that was under the name of his relatives, or close associates.

OFL sent a form to Mahmutaj on 18 February 2020, asking the latter to declare the source of his assets.

Kasem Mahmutaj does also have a criminal record, after being convicted of 25 years in Italy on prostitution and narcotics charges.

The Operation Force of Law launched in January 2020 and revealed 1,500 suspicious wealth properties, of which 523 were seized following a court order.
