Procedures for the selection of a new head of state begin this Wednesday.

At 12:30 PM, the Speaker of the Assembly will meet with the chairs of parliamentary committees to set a date for the first voting round.

The Socialist Party recommended May 10, meanwhile, Democrats have yet to propose a date.

If none of the candidates receive 84 votes in the first round, then a second one will kick off within 7 days, requiring the same number of votes to get elected.

Parties can vote for a name that they both agree on until the third round, on the opposite, the ruling majority has the necessary amount of votes to elect the president in the fourth and fifth rounds.

The entire procedure is expected to conclude by the end of this month.

So far, none of the political parties have endorsed any candidate. However, Socialist MPs were asked to propose 3 people, whose names have not been revealed.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has ruled out chances of having a new president come from the ranks of the Socialist Party.

According to Euronews Albania’s Barometer poll, Pandeli Majko and Majlinda Bregu were the most voted names for president.
