Put differently, 1 in 5 people in Albania are categorized as poor, and in contrast to neighboring countries, Albania has the highest poverty rate.

In 2021 there were 622,000 poor people, a drop from figures in 2020 which pointed to 885,000.

Economic recovery led out of the crisis 263,000 people, who were receiving less than $5.50 per day.

Data shows that the level of poverty in Albania remains high, despite forecast of a downward tendency.

However, due to increased prices, the path out of poverty is expected to be slow, in order to reach 17% by next year.

A similar state has been seen in the region as well. But in comparison to Albania, the ratio between the poor and the rest of the general population is low, with the report showing Serbia as the country with the best standards.

The data were assessed by the World Bank which reports that 405,000 people escaped poverty in 5 states, of which more than a half were in Albania.

According to this year’s scenario, the institution says that the poverty norm for the Western Balkans will drop by 1 percentage point to 13,8%, amid concerns that increased prices on food and energy might alter the report estimates.
