US Ambassador Yuri Kim said on Monday during her word at a conference organized by the High Judicial Council that the justice system in Albania must meet EU standards.

“We cannot and we must not continue with the so-called “justice” of the past. The justice that must come to Albania – as a NATO ally, a friend of the United States, a future member of the EU family – is the justice whose standards are in accordance with the EU, that is the norm for Europe and the rest of the Western world, including the United States”, Ambassador Kim said.

“It is what the Albanians people expect and deserve, and it is what is required by the EU”.

At the conference titled “Justice in Challenging Times”, the US Ambassador took aim at the recent critiques aimed at SPAK.

“Justice reform will be considered successful when we no longer think it is appropriate for political leaders in power or out of power to call for the prosecution of this one or that one; to say that justice is only served when the other one is put in jail and to claim that justice is not served when my one is put in jail”, said the US Ambassador.

“That’s not justice – those are not the standards that we are seeking to help you achieve in Albania. Those are not the standards that the Albanian people are demanding when they talk about justice reform”.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Edi Rama criticized SPAK as he was speaking from the podium of the Socialist Party’s National Assembly.

Rama said SPAK is “losing its battle against the evil in the country”, and warned that the government’s patience is wearing thin.

SPAK chief Arben Kraja told Euronews Albania that the institution is not triggered to react based on political declarations, but on written complaints, implying that the Albanian Prime Minister has not brought up any specific cases to prosecutors.
