Albania will receive a total of $81.3 million to reform its water sector.

In a press release posted on the official website of the World Bank on Friday, it says that $75 million will be allocated in the form of a loan and another $6.3 million as a grant.

The loan is part of the National Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Modernization Program, which is co-financed by the Government of Albania.

The grant is funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and will be managed by the World Bank.

The program aims to improve the activity and financial performance of water supply and sanitation utilities as well as increase access to safe water services in Albania.

The World Bank notes that Albania is rich in water resources and has all the capacities to supply the entire population with safe and fresh drinking water however, the majority of water utilities in Albania “continue to perform poorly, both technically and financially”.

Among others, the World Bank calls for further reform in management and organizational models pertaining to the water sector, in order to achieve national targets.
