The Anti-Informality Unit will identify the 100 richest citizens in Albania and verify if they have paid their contributions and met all tax obligations.

In an interview for Euronews Albania, the unit director, Vasilika Vjero, said that this list will be expanded further and the State Police will be involved in this process as well, along with the Department of Money Laundering Prevention.

“We will compile the data in a register of the richest persons in our country. It is a delicate process and the identification of these individuals is quite difficult. We will use data from the State Police and the Directory of Money Laundering Prevention,” – said Vjero.

The first individuals that will be put under the microscope of tax inspectors are those working in the business sector, insurance companies, construction, as well as individuals who indulge in a life of luxury.

“We’ve already identified all the high-risk sectors and we determined that they were the trade sector, construction, insurance – which is a new market in our country – and individuals living a life of luxury,” – said Vjero.

The Anti-formality unit has already begun investigations on the wealth of 32 individuals, who are reported to spend more money than they’ve declared.

Officials from the anti-informality unit have also sent an open invitation to citizens who wish to report cases of citizens who aren’t employed, yet spend large amounts of money.

“We will also take into consideration denouncements made by the general public, but they will certainly be verified and fact-checked,” – she added.

The focus of this investigation will be large companies, not small businesses.
